Introduction
Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions (TNEA) is a state-level counselling process for admission to BE/BTech and related programmes. The Directorate of Technical Education (DoTE) Chennai annually regulates the TNEA Counselling 2026 in online mode, which is a single admission process. With registrations being open from May 2, 2026, TNEA counselling will continue till
Seats in the counselling TNEA are allocated depending on the students’ 10+2 marks. The list of the TNEA Counselling Colleges includes government and government-aided engineering colleges, university departments, and constituent colleges of Anna University and Annamalai University.
Candidates who are interested and eligible to participate in the admission process must be aware of the TNEA counselling schedule, how to apply for TNEA counselling and the fee, etc.
TNEA Counselling 2026
TNEA 2026 counselling registration has begin on May 3, 2026 and will continue till June 02, 2026. DoTE administers the state-level Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions (TNEA) counselling procedure for admission to government and government-aided engineering institutes based on class 12 grades. TNEA 2026 counselling is divided into three types: general counselling, TNEA supplementary counselling, and SCA to SC counselling.
- General Counselling is the main admission round for engineering seats, in which all eligible TNEA rank holders participate. The Seat allotment is based on merit rank, reservation, and choice filling
- TNEA supplementary counselling is conducted after general counselling based on seat availability. To fill vacant seats after the main rounds, Candidates without allotment or those seeking vacant seats
- SCA to SC Counselling is a special round in which unfilled seats reserved for Scheduled Caste Arunthathiyar (SCA) candidates are converted and offered to eligible Scheduled Caste (SC) candidates to ensure that reserved seats are not left vacant.
How Rank Lists are prepared for TNEA Counselling
The TNEA ranks list is based on the normalised scores that students get in physics, chemistry, and mathematics from their Class 12 examination results. Mathematics will have a weightage of 100 marks, as will physics and chemistry combined to yield a score of 100 marks for each subject. The total weightage to rank students is therefore 200 marks.
TNEA Score = Mathematics (out of 100) + (Physics / 2) (out of 50) + (Chemistry / 2) (out of 50)
Each candidate will receive a general rank (for use in the allocation of open category seats) and a community rank (for use in allocating seats by the reservation community, such as BC, MBC, SC, etc.).
For TNEA counselling for other state students, marks will be normalised so that they may be ranked equitably. If two or more candidates have the same aggregate score, the following tie-breaking rules will apply: Higher Math marks, Higher Physics marks, Date of birth (older candidate prevails), random number.

How to apply for TNEA Counselling
The Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions (TNEA) Counselling Process is a structured and transparent online procedure. The complete TNEA admission counselling procedure consists of seven major stages: registration, TNEA counselling fees, choice filling, application submission, random number generation, document verification, and seat allotment. For a better understanding, we have shared the detailed process for the counselling below
Registration at TNEA counselling website
The first stage of the TNEA counselling is through online registration. Candidates will create their account using basic personal information such as full name (as it appears on the Class 10 certificate), date of birth, gender, valid mobile number and email address during the TNEA Counselling registration.
Step-by-Step TNEA Registration Process
Candidates must follow the following steps to register for TNEA counselling
Step 1: Visit the TNEA Counselling website, tneaonline.org:
Step 2: Now, click on “New Registration”, and enter basic details such as name, email ID, mobile number, and date of birth. And the TNEA counselling login details will be generated.
Step 3: Log in with the generated credentials to complete the application form. Fill out the form with personal, special reservation, scholarship, school of study, and academic information.
Step 4: Upload scanned copies of all relevant documents (10th, 11th, and 12th grade mark sheets, transfer certificates, and so on).
Step 5: Now, pay your registration fee online via available payment gateways, net banking, credit/debit card, or UPI. The category-wise TNEA counselling fee details are as follows:
- General Category: ₹500.

TNEA Random Number Generation
After the application form has been successfully submitted, each applicant will be assigned their own TNEA random number. The TNEA random number will be calculated as a tiebreaker when there are two applicants receiving the same aggregate score on the merit list. If there are two or more students who have the same total score, then the tiebreaker will proceed in order of the following criteria:
- Higher marks in Mathematics
- Higher marks in Physics
- Higher marks in the optional subject
- Date of birth (older candidate preferred)
- Random number
